The Knit Wits group is a wonderful circle of ladies who gather together to learn and practice the age-old arts of knitting and crocheting. It is the second "yarn arts" group at Macland, along with the Hookers for Christ group (previously spotlighted in the Press).
The Knit Wits circle was founded earlier this year by Pat Morrison and Beverly Thompson. It allows individuals to come together to share their yarn skills and provides an opportunity for beginners to learn from more experienced crafters. The group meets once a month (the third-Monday), at 7 p.m., at a different member's home each time and enjoys a delightful evening of fun and fellowship (and fabulous desserts!) while creating beautiful blankets, scarves, hats, shawls, and afghans both for their personal use and as gifts for others or for local charities.
When asked how she feels about the group, Pat Morrison says, "I love the fellowship! Getting together with these women is so much fun, and I love teaching others how to knit and seeing them complete a project. We've got all levels of knitters in the group - some who have never knitted before and others who have been knitting all of their lives. We've also got a couple of ladies who crochet, and they're teaching others in the group who are interested in trying that. I'm excited about the interest in the group and the revival of knitting and crocheting as a hobby - for all ages. Plus, it's just nice to get together in a comfortable setting and talk about our lives and share what's on our minds".
In addition, Beverly Thompson says, "It's just a wonderful time of getting together with friends who share a common interest in an age-old craft. We talk and laugh; we share patterns for projects, learn from each other, and create beautiful things. It's just amazing, and I love it".
The primary focus of the Knit Wits group is fellowship but, as stated above, they do use their talents in service to others as well. Eight women currently attend regular get-togethers, and they are happy to include any person - be it a Macland member, a special friend, or a new neighbor - who has an interest in learning to knit or crochet in a comfortable, warm, and friendly setting. Indeed, with their emphasis on companionship, camaraderie, and friendship, the Knit Wits circle is the perfect example of a "belonging" small group, where folks can feel welcome and accepted.
