Westwood Small Group

The Westwood Neighborhood Small Group - so named because the group meets in the Westwood subdivision in Powder Springs. It is one of the longest running small groups at Macland. Begun in 1998, the group grew to bursting in less than three years and spun off a second group (the Horseshoe Bend Small Group). The Westwood group then began to re-build as newcomers found a place of love and learning within the small faith community. Today, a diverse and eclectic membership comprises the Westwood small group. Married couples, singles, young, and the young-at-heart all gather one Saturday afternoon a month - at 2:30 p.m. - for prayer and study, followed by a time of fellowship.

The primary focus of the Westwood group is Bible Study. Over the years, the group has explored such topics as the Minor Prophets, angels, the Apocrypha, the Pastoral Epistles, and a comparison of Christian denominations. Members of the group enjoy a time of fellowship and socializing after every meeting (which, by the way, includes the shameless consumption of some of the very best desserts in the world), as well as occasional cookouts and potluck suppers together and an annual holiday party.

When asked what being a part of the Westwood Neighborhood Small Group has meant to her, Karen Williamson replies with three words: love, acceptance, and a hungry audience. "Over the years, the 'landscape' of the Westwood group has changed," Karen says. "People have come and gone, the Horseshoe Bend group was formed with folks from within our midst, new members have blended with the faithful remnant. However, through it all, the sense of loving, caring, giving, and acceptance for each other has been overwhelming. Frances and Jack [Tucker] have been wonderful hosts for our group since its inception, and they are one of the most genuine examples of hospitality and grace I've ever known. But, what touches me the most about this group - and it has been true since the beginning - is the thirst to learn. Every person who has ever crossed the threshold of our group has longed to be fed with the knowledge and love of God. They are eager and interested to explore the Bible, as well as any other topic that will increase their understanding of the Lord, the history of Christianity, and the modern-day church. No pastor or professor could ask for better or more willing students, and I feel honored and privileged to be called their teacher."

The Westwood Neighborhood Small Group is always open to new members, and they encourage anyone who is seeking an inviting place to belong and plug into the Holy Spirit to join them. With their focus on Bible study, spiritual growth, and fellowship, the Westwood small group offers the perfect atmosphere for people to feel welcome and to help members grow in their walk with Christ.
