In December of 2005, Macland Presbyterian Church became an official Partner In Education with Compton Elementary School. In this relationship, the church helps provide school supplies for in-need students, supplies mentors and other volunteers, and keeps the staff, students, and parents in constant prayer.
Mentors are assigned to students (K-5th grade) for whom a mentoring relationship is determined to be beneficial by teachers and/or counselors. Adults serving as mentors are encouraged to commit to one full academic year of service. Most mentors meet with their student once a week, but scheduling is very flexible and is arranged to fit the mentor's schedule.
Those interested in becoming a mentor, or learning more about it, should contact Rhonda Johnson, the Parent Facilitator at Compton at 770-222-3700. Mentor Applications are available on the bulletin board in the gathering area, but can also be obtained directly from Kelly. All applicants will be subject to a background search by Cobb County Schools prior to participation in the program. Once an application is approved, the mentor will be assigned a student and they can begin meeting regularly.
On the first Friday of every month, Compton needs volunteer readers to come in and read to classes and/or individual students. Readers can either provide the book(s) or visit the Compton Media Center to find age-appropriate books as recommended by the media specialists. Those interested in volunteering in this capacity should contact the Parent Facilitator, at 770-222-3700.
There are many other volunteer needs at Compton, including helping in the Media Center, restoring the children's' courtyard and garden, painting walls, etc. If you or your small group would like to get more information, please contact the Parent Facilitator, at 770-222-3700.
